Part of the challenge of being good in a world dominated by so many things you could call so many other names (names other than ‘good’), is that sometimes it can feel like you have to completely change the system in order to make an impact. And sometimes that’s the right way to go about things.
Sometimes, though, simply learning how to leverage your supply chain to make ethical choices is impacting enough. By employing conscientious sourcing/procurement and manufacturing practices, companies like Forgotten Shirts are showing us a better way to do business.
All of their shirts are made from fair trade Ugandan Cotton. They use safe factories in Kampala, Uganda to help create a business system there, and ensure that the workers are fairly compensated. They then ship the shirts back to Minneapolis, where they employ inner city youth as screen printers. Every step of their manufacturing processes benefit people who damn sure deserve some benefits. We like that.
Each shirt purchased is estimated to impact 3 people’s work across the globe for 74 minutes. Is that impact overwhelming? Maybe…
